REFLECTING ON 2020

I woke up early this morning to enjoy the cold winter air while I type this blog post. I wanted to embrace this moment when reflecting on the year, because it was definitely not an easy one. This is probably the hardest blog post I’ve had to write thus far, because it requires me (and you) to look back on all the events that took place around the world, and in our personal lives, that caused so much heartache, sadness, frustration, uncertainty, anger, and life lessons we will never forget. However, I don’t want this entire blog post to focus on all the sad moments we faced throughout the year. I know that if we each look a little deeper, we can find the light within the dark times.

“The night is dark just before the dawn. And I promise you, the dawn is coming.” – Harvey Dent, The Dark Knight

For some reason this quote came to my and it felt appropriate for this post and mood.

2020 has truly been like no other.

This year felt like it ripped me a part and forced me to sew myself back together. The image that comes to my mind is the character Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. No matter how many times her arm or leg was ripped off, she was able to sew it back up and embrace both her strengths and weaknesses.

Lessons that 2020 has taught me:

  1. It’s okay to be different or to be the black sheep in the family.

  2. If you have the courage, patience, faith, and love, you are more than capable of rebuilding damaged relationships to make something beautiful again.

  3. Growing pains are normal and we will experience them no matter what age we are.

  4. Speaking your truth is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Even if you don’t get the outcome you’re looking for, it’s important to know that you spoke up for yourself.

  5. Self-care is not selfish.

  6. Creating boundaries is necessary in order to live a peaceful and harmonious life.

  7. Do things that make you happy. Forget what other people may think.

  8. Embrace your journey, because it’s truly unique to you.

  9. Nature is a great healer.

  10. Talking about uncomfortable subjects should happen more often to help you learn, grow, and acknowledge what may need to change or improve.

  11. Social media is not reality.

  12. Always take the time to research and learn about new subjects you aren’t familiar with.

  13. It’s important to have multiple outlets to express yourself or share your thoughts.

  14. Therapy is truly good for the soul and for a peace of mind.

  15. Make sure to tell the people you care about how much they mean to you. No one is promised tomorrow.

  16. Everyone has their own demons they struggle with. It’s important to remember that the way people act doesn’t always have something to do with you. They may be going through a lot and are doing their best to keep themselves together.

  17. Expect the unexpected. Always.

  18. Never let go of your inner child.

  19. Everyday we wake up gives us the opportunity to work on being a better version of ourselves from the day before.

  20. Always remember to love yourself through the good, the bad, and the ugly.

These life lessons did not come easy, but I am truly grateful to sit here and reflect on all that I’ve learned in this last year.

I also invite you to take some time to reflect on the life lessons 2020 has helped you through. It may be difficult, but I know each of us can find that silver lining.

I decided to keep this post short, so it doesn’t drag on like 2020 did – Ha! Also, sometimes shorter posts can have the most impact. I truly hope 2021 will bring you much success, happiness, and healing. Remember to take it day by day and know that you are doing the best you can for yourself. Things may not always be easy to deal with, but I guarantee you will be starting the new year so much stronger than you ever imagined.
