Dealing With Anger Via Aromatherapy

Anger is a strong emotion, socially defined as negative and unacceptable. Anger is an emotional response to a perception of threat, hurt or provocation. It occurs when a person feels that his or hers boundaries are being or going to be violated.

In fact anger can be a cover-up emotion for frustration, humiliation, embarrassment, jealousy, guilt, shame, hurt, sadness, loss of control over something or someone, feeling of being misunderstood, unaccepted, powerlessness, loss of connection with a family or close to you person, fear of being unloved, left alone, social or cultural pressure that makes you deny your true self.

Anger is a healthy emotion when you understand the nature of it, acknowledge it, accept it, know what triggers it, deal with it in a healthy way. However, anger becomes a big problem when you keep on covering it up, suppressing and holding it back, which becomes a part of our inner pandora’s box. It’s bad when it starts to affect your daily life in a way that may hurt you or people around you, like driving a car as a maniac until you cool down (sometimes it may require a professional help). In addition to that anger can cause various health problems as well.

There are many ways how you can cope with anger. You can yell, punch a wall, or better a sand bag, hit something, do boxing, take a cold shower or splash some cold water on your face, cry in order to release the energy from this emotion. You can also use anger as a fuel to self-empowerment or self-development.

The best thing you can do when dealing with anger is to be aware of it, accept it and acknowledge it. Which is in fact a pretty difficult thing to do when you’re experiencing anger at that very moment. And to be honest, it’s the last you really want at that moment. That’s when aromatherapy is very handy in my opinion and personal experience. And it’s a fantastic tool in general to work with our emotions.

Essential oils here are classified in three categories, to calm the agony of anger, to help coping with anger and to help releasing unexpressed anger.

At first you can use essential oils to calm down so that you do not do or say something that you will regret afterwards, and that you will be calm enough to think rationally and acknowledge this emotion, and find a way how to cope with it in a healthy and safe way. It’s a great way to place a drop of essential oil on your palms, rub them together and deeply inhale couple of times. Combining the breathing technique like inhaling on a count of 8 and exhaling on a count of 8 is very helpful.
