How to Feng Shui A Study Room

First, Clean and Declutter.

The first thing to do when using feng shui in any space, is to make sure you clean and declutter.

Cleaning and decluttering refresh the room’s energy, getting rid of stagnant vibrations that can make it hard to concentrate.

Cleaning also enhances the feng shui metal element, which is the element responsible for memory, concentration, clarity, and even creativity!

One thing to keep in mind for the study room is that it’s better for the room to have only one purpose if possible.

This will help minimize distractions and it’s also better for feng shui!

Keeping the study room the study room means that it will have clean energy, making it easier to concentrate and focus.

If the study room HAS to be multi-purpose, try to organize it so that the distractions can be put away when someone is using the room to study.

If the study room is also a playroom or media room, for example, using cabinets to store electronics or toys can help keep them out of sight.

You can also use room dividers, plants, or even curtains to block energy from the study area.

Find the Perfect Feng Shui Layout

If you want to use a feng shui layout for the study room, you can use the feng shui bagua map to plan where things should go in the room. (For a picture of the bagua and how to use it, see this post: What is the Feng Shui Bagua Map? The ULTIMATE guide for applying it to your home!)

To use the bagua map, line up the bottom of the map so the entry door lands in either the knowledge and wisdom area, the career area, or the travel and helpful people area.

From there, some ideas for layout and decor are:

In the Fame Area: Place awards, achievements, or things related to study/school goals.

In the Knowledge and Wisdom Area: Keep the books related to the area of study here when not in use.

You can also place objects related to the area of study here.

If you are in law school, for example, you could keep a judge’s gavel or legal books here.

If you’re studying to be a geography teacher, you could keep a large map in this area.

In the Creativity Area: Keep art supplies, craft supplies, or extra study supplies (like notebooks and pens) in this area.

If you are studying to be an artist or graphic designer, you could even place design boards or art samples here.

In the Helpful People Area: This is a great place to put pictures of mentors or inspiring people.

If you find Einstein inspiring, for example, you could place his picture in this area.

You could also create a helpful people box and place the names of your teachers and professors in it and switch it out each school year or semester.

laptop, notebook, and pencils on a desk.

Choose a Desk.

Ideally, the desk or table in the study room should be made of solid material, like wood, metal, or plastic.

Solid desks will help with grounding and stability, which leads to better focus and mental clarity.

Glass tables or desks can be used but they activate the water element, which can cause lack of focus or motivation.

If you have to use a glass table or desk, consider covering it with a desk mat or tablecloth to help with stability and concentration.

Optimal Feng Shui Desk Position for a Study Room

Another thing to keep in mind when creating a feng shui study room layout is desk placement.

In feng shui, the desk position should be in the command position.

The command position is the seat of power in the room.

Ideally, you should place the desk where you can see the door from your seat. In this position, you can see everyone who enters the room.

Of course, this means the desk shouldn’t be facing the wall.

If your study room is small and you can’t place the desk in the center of the room, you CAN place it against the wall.

Just place a small mirror in front of the desk, reflecting the door. This way, anyone who is seated at the desk can still see everyone who enters the room. (For more information about desk placement, you can see this post: how to feng shui your desk for career success and happiness at work!)

One more tip for desk placement in the study room is to have a solid wall behind your chair.

This creates safety and relaxes the nervous system, allowing better concentration and focus.

You can also place tall bookshelves…
