This weekend is a long one, thanks to the Labor Day holiday. The first one in the US was celebrated on September 5th, 1882 in New York City when workers marched through Manhattan to honor their achievements. The labor movement had been growing for some time and this first parade was a way to acknowledge the contributions of American workers.
Working is in my blood. I come from a long line of farm folks and laborers. My grandfather was a mason who built many stone walls in the Kettle Moraine area. Dad worked on the family farm before getting a job in a foundry. When times were tough, he held three jobs. At night, he’d crack a well-deserved cold beer and watch the news to unwind.
In our world, there is labor every day.
Even on holidays, you’ll find most members of my kin doing something. It’s how we roll. This weekend, I’ll be completing the fourth draft of book number nine. I’ve been pecking away on this manuscript for months now – and it seems to be finally coming together.
From the outside, writing may seem easy. It’s not. I may not be out in the fields, but I can assure you, that the hours are long and the work can be frustrating. You can’t just “phone” a manuscript in – it must be tweaked, honed, edited, and revamped over and over again.
You have to do the hard labor.
So away I go, sitting in front of the computer until my eyes feel like they want to fall out of their sockets and my back begins to yell at me for too much sitting. But at the end of each day, there will be a cold glass of sake waiting for me and another episode of Peaky Blinders. My work and relaxation may look different than Dad’s, but my labor is just as rigorous.
