Essential Oils and Kids

Hi guys, this post is to all mamas out there who are considering using essential oils with kids. As you may have noticed aromatherapy becomes very popular these days, and using essential oils at home is also not the new thing any more.

In fact I started using essential oils basically for my son as a holistic way to naturally calm him down and reduce his tantrums, nightmares, improve sleep pattern and help with anxiety. It worked very well, and that was the beginning of my long lasting love with essential oils.

However it’s important to know that even though essential oils are natural, they are also very potent and concentrated substances. And not all of the essential oils can be safe with kids due to its natural composition.

Today I really want to share the list of kid safe essential oils. But before I do it I want to recommend you to read really awesome book by Valerie Ann Worwood “Aromatherapy For The Healthy Child” where you can find lots of very useful information regarding the use of essential oils with kids and for specific conditions.

Generally safe essential oils to use around kids after 2 years old:

Blue Tansy, Bergamot, Black Pepper, Cedarwood atlas, Cypress, Copaiba, Coriander, Clary Sage, Chamomile Roman and German, Frankincense, Elemi, Geranium, Ginger, Grapefruit, Juniper, Helichrysum, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin/Tangerine, Marjoram sweet, Neroli, Orange, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Pine, Sandalwood, Siberian Fir, Spearmint, Spruces, Tea Tree, Vetiver, Ylang Ylang

At the very young age essential oils can be used in some specific situation where they can be helpful, but other then that there is no need in just applying essential oils on babies for the sake of applying it. For after shower massage just natural carrier oil would do just great. You can basically substitute essential oils with hydrosols which are way more mild and still can provide benefits to the little one. According to Valerie Ann Worwood in certain situations (like colic, eczema, diaper rush) essential oils can be used at the very young age, but not on a daily basis, occasionally if there is a need.

2 weeks to 2 months – 1 drop per 30 ml (1 oz) of sweet almond oil – Chamomile German (Matricaria recutita), Chamomile Roman (Anthemis nobilis), Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), Mandarin/Tangerine (Citrus reticulata)

3 to 6 months – 2 drops/30 ml (1 oz) carrier oil – all of the above + Coriander (Coriandrum sativum), Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens), Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)

7 months to 2 years – 3-4 drops/30 ml (1 oz) carrier oil – all of the above + Frankincense (Boswellia carterii), Orange sweet (Citrus sinensis), Palmarosa (Cymbopogon martinii)

Wait, did I forget to mention about diffusing essential oil? In general diffusing is safe as long as you diffuse the right oils and not 24/7. In fact it can be beneficial in many ways, from supporting a healthy sleep to immune system during flu season. For very young kids 10-15 mins…
