According to the vision described in the first chapter of Ezekiel (1:4-26), Merkaba was adopted by ancient Jewish mystics as an object of their contemplation.
The symbol was actually referenced about 44 times in the Old Testament of the Bible.

The first part is “Mer“, the second is “ka“, and the last part of the word is “ba“.
