feng shui tips for beginners

Sharing is caring!

If you’re looking for feng shui tips for beginners, chances are it’s starting to feel confusing. There seems to be so many rules and where do you even start?!

The good news is that feng shui is actually pretty simple.

To start, you have to know this: feng shui means “wind” and “water” in Chinese, and the main principle is to enhance your home’s energy flow.

This means that ANYONE can practice feng shui principles – no matter where you live!

Whether you live in one room, a huge house, or a small apartment – you can practice feng shui!

feng shui tips for beginners

Here are 4 feng shui tips for beginners that anyone can use to get started with feng shui.

One: Because feng shui is about creating flow within a space, you want to make sure that energy can flow within your room or home.

Go through each room and think about how wind or water would move through it.

But also think about how YOU and YOUR FAMILY move through it!

Some things to consider:

Can you enter each room freely?
Do you bump up against any furniture?
Is everything pushed up against the wall (and is it possible to make a little space behind it?)
Is the furniture balanced, or is it all on one wall?
Are there things behind the door so that it doesn’t open freely?
Do you have a LOT of one color in a room (or in the whole home?)
Are your walls filled to the brim with art? Is the art hung really high or really low on the wall?
How is the lighting in the room? Is it really bright or really dark?
Is there a particular room in your home that no one seems to use for whatever reason?
Is there a room in your home that you’re using more as a storage space?
Are the closets stuffed so there’s no room to put more things in there?
Are there lots of mirrors in one room or all over your home?
Is the garage full of storage items? (Yes the garage counts!)
Are there items that need to be repaired or home improvement projects that need to be finished?
Are there any leaks?
Are there any dead or dying plants?
Are there burnt out light bulbs?

While each room in your home affects the others, it’s also important to remember the purpose of each room.

For example, bedrooms might not have a lot of bright lights or bright colors, because they are restful spaces. A kitchen might have lots of light and bright colors, because it’s a busier room in the home.

Nothing is “good” or “bad,” you’re just making notes of your home to see which rooms could use a little more balance and flow.

Usually there’s one or two things on the list that stick out to you immediately.

Let’s say it’s that there are doors in your home that don’t open freely. This is an easy fix that can make a huge difference to your energy in the space!

The doors in your home represent the energy in your life and how it moves through.

When energy moves freely, it means that new, fresh energy can enter your space, and stagnant energy can easily leave. The better the flow of energy, the better your overall life will feel to you!

Fix any doors that don’t open properly. Oil the hardware and move objects that block the door from opening fully.

This can make a huge difference in your day to day life – don’t underestimate it!

Two: Is there an area of your life that isn’t going particularly well?

Now that we have a list of things that we can change in your home to create better energy flow, we can use the feng shui map to see which area of your life corresponds with that area of your home.

This will give you an idea of where to start (especially if your list seems overwhelming!)

The feng shui map of your home is called the bagua map.

It basically divides your space into 9 areas, and each area corresponds with a different area of your life.

You can use the map over your whole home, but you can also use it over just one room!

So if you live in one room or a studio type home, the bagua map works the exact same way for you as it does for someone with a huge home.

Now that you know how the bagua works, you can use it to get started with the list you created.

Is there an area of your life that isn’t going as well as you’d like? Check that area for the things on the list.

Usually there’s a direct link between how things are going with the types of things in that area of your home. In fact, a lot of times it is eerily accurate!

For example, are there a lot of broken items in your money area?

Broken items in your money area can mean you’re “broke” all the time and can’t seem to keep money in your life! Leaks are the same way – if there’s a leak in your money area, you might find that you’re always leaking money!

Let’s say the garage is the only area of your home that you really consider to be a “problem area.”

It’s full of things you need to get rid of, or…
